Are There Christians in India?

Most of India’s people practice either Hinduism or Islam. But Christianity has nearly 32 million followers, making it the third largest religion in the country. Given that India has well over a billion people, this amounts to only around 2% of the population. There are various theories as to when exactly Christianity arrived in India, but it has a long history, and was firmly established by the 6th century AD. European Catholic missionaries followed, landing on India’s shores in the 16th century and continuing for hundreds of years afterwards. Many of India’s Christian schools and hospitals were the result of Roman Catholic missions.

At Quenched our mission is to bring both clean water and the gospel to global communities who are unfamiliar with Jesus. Currently we are focusing our work in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar where there are over 360 million people. Only 0.1% of them profess faith in Christ. We’re committed to offering everyone both a physical solution as well as a spiritual one. We do this by offering two life changing things - a well for the community and and the life changing message of Jesus.
